| Well, winter kill got the best of my koi and goldfish, they all died over the winter because I didn't know the goldfish were spawning and the fry grew up and now they all died and ammonia killed the koi So, I am planning out a new pond, and it is going to be a fishing pond I am going to stock it with a few rainbow trout, bluegills, and sunfish, along with fathead minnows. I was planning on making it 12fx14fx6f. Here are the stocking plans:
x10 Rainbow trout x30 bluegill x20 sunfish x200 fathead minnows
How does this sound? I guess the pond will be about 20 000 gallons at the least, but thats just a guess. Any ideas? _________________ I have been keeping aquariums most of my life. | Don't trout need cold water through the summer? Sorry to hear about your Koi. That's a big financial loss. What about bass? |

| so you want to make a nice new pond for a bunch of ugly fish...??? i don't get it...
those large game fish need alot more biological filtration than a couple of koi... plus... they will murk up the water, and you will never have a sparkling clear pond... it will look like a pond at a park... i think they need soft dirt or sand in the bottom...
gross... |

| | He wants it for fishing not viewing. I think 12 by 14 by 6 feet may be a bit small for a good fishing pond though. You'd certainly need more filtration, like a few garbage can sized filters I'd think. |

| Yeah, I might add a waterfall, because they look good and they filter the water. _________________ I have been keeping aquariums most of my life. I have kept both fresh and salt water, cichlids, catfish, loaches, clownfish, wrasses, and everything in between. Feel free to ask me any questions!

| Maybe you could have Florida Spotted Gars and heat the pond in the winter enough to keep them alive! I think their territory may extend up into the great lakes, but I'm not positive. They'll probably get close to 3 feet long in a pond. You could feed them rats and baby chicks!! Maybe you could tie meat on the end of a rope and have a little sport tug of war with them. They get really enthusiastic when hand fed, kind of like an alligators pit when feeding alligator's. Mine snatch food out of the air when I hang it over the surface. It's fun! Just have to watch the fingers!!! |

| um... i don't understand how a waterfall filters water... but i would add one to up the oxygen on the pond...
for biological i use bogs... a bog will outperform any manufactured filter... i also rock 55gallon drums for mechanical... on my 26,000g pond i have 10 55g drums with mechanical filtration... all of them are venturi type... everything is powered by a 1 horsepower pump... i think they are 15,000GPH or something... and i have a 1/4 horsepower pump running the bog waterfall...
you should see the electric bill... |

| | Yea! Sounds like you have quite a bit of space too. I'm jealous. I have a balcony fountain with an elephant ear plant with an 8 inch trunk growing in it. It's in my version of a pond with a waterfall. I expect the leaves to get to maybe 5 feet long each this summer, and I'll have the coolest balcony plant in the neighborhood. |

at the deepest point it's about 6' deep... and the shallow area is 2 feet... the bog is also 2 feet...

yeah, and i'm running out of space... and i love elephant ear plant... but they either need alot of nutrients to get huge, or a whollata potting soil... |

| | The elephant ear is growing in water and pigeon poop. The pigeons and other birds love to wash in my fountain and the damned pigeons crap it up regularly. I added some potting soil to the lower basin for nutrients, but straight fertiliser tends to kill the mosquito fish. There is a waterfall so the water doesn't stagnate and that keeps the roots from rotting. Last year when the trunk was half this size the leaves got to about 2 1/2 feet. This year since the trunk is so much bigger I expect the leaves to be maybe 5 feet long when summer comes. |

| | a-ha... pigeon/bird poop is FTW for plants... plus you have a bioload in there... i thought it was in an empty pond... |
