In your opinion...

What makes a "successful" breeder of fish? or What do you look for in a breeder that would make you purchase there stock?

depends on what type of fish...

say like goldfish/koi... you want all of his fish to have good color, conformation, health, personality, and good bloodlines... even if that means you have to cull more than half of the spawn... wich i used to do when i bred fancy goldfish...

tropical fish... well... just make sure they aren't crossbreed or something...

cichlids could go either way... some flowerhorn breeders go for originality even though it will compromize health and function of the fish itself... asme thing with oscars, parrot cichlids, balloon rams... etc...

some cichlids breeders are purist... they want the cichlid to look just like it would in the wild...

since i breed only cichlids, i try to keep them species specific, and closest to F0 as possible... the turnout shouldn't be a factor...

i've breed just about every type of fish in the trade... from goldfish to bettas, from cichlids to wild species that don't even have a FAQ or common name... those are the hardest... since there really isn't a study for them and tank conditions have to mimic the wild habitat to the smallest detail...

my dad was breeding goldfish before i was born... he worked at a feeder and fancy farm... so he would also breed very gorgeous fancy goldfish in our house when i was really young... so i started helping my dad out when i was 7... then he traded jobs and broke his back, retired and left... we had tanks in the house, but i didn't get very serious untill i was about 16 or so... so you could say i have 10+ of breeding experience with tons of success...

That explains your seemingly obsessive breeding Gumbii. My stepmother is a marine biologist and turned her attention to growing and selling orchids. She used to have 9 tanks where she did some Crayfish behavior research, nothing like what you were exposed to, but that's how I got an intrest in aquariums.

I have never breed fish, but I would think that it would be someone who payed attention to the smallest details. Made sure that they where purchasing the best of the best to breed and not compromising. There tanks would be crystal clear with perfect water conditions. They would also never compromise on the quality of fish that they sell, gaining them a well desired reputation as being someone you would want to purchase fish from.
