| | want to get some java moss for my 10 gal breeding tank for the fry to hide in. Are the incandescant bulbs that came with it enough light for this type of plant? Running 15 watt bulbs in it since the 25 watt ones get to hot and were starting to warp the hood. |

| Java moss grows crazy fast, even with no light at all. It is a pest in my 50 gallon as it always wraps around my vallisneria. By the way, I changed the layout of my tank, will post some pics soon _________________ I have been keeping aquariums most of my life. | IMO the best way to grow Java moss is to tie it to a piece of wood. It'll grow onto the wood and make it so it's easy to prune. Java moss when it's long easily gets stuff caught in it. I don't mind it in floating clumps sometimes, but I really like it growing on wood with fish that prune it down like a well mowed lawn. |

| I've got a flourecent hood on my 10 gal for these baby danios. It's got one tube/bulb in it. The one end of the tank gets a little indirect sun from a north facing window, too.
The tank heater (and room heat that varies a bit) is really it for heat in that tank. I am relying on that little natural light to balance the spectrum for plant material, but I would think one could find a plant bulb to fit the fixture.
The low 30gal "breeder tank" that I put on my kitchen counter is lit with an under cabinet light that I know has a plant bulb alternative. The tank is covered by two plates of extra strength glass that I epoxyed a small knob on the one. I ordered/got a plastic hinge to put between the two glass plates. The hinge split apart but it still keeps the glass on glass thing from going on. The light gets through to 90% of the tank. |

| I'm not sure if they'd fit, but there are the SHO screw-in type fluorescents that are supposed to be really good plant bulbs. They would fit in the screw-in part, but are a bit wider outside of the socket. There's a couple kinds and they can be found if you Google SHO aquarium light.
Java moss doesn't need all this amount of light though, it's just if you wanted to grow higher light plants and only have an incandescent type screw in fixture. |

Every thing I have read on java moss always says it's a slow growing plant, is there different types some that grow fast and some that grow slow? |

| It kind of depends on how much you have. If for matters of example, it doubles in size every 2 weeks (I'm just guessing), then if you have a little bit you won't notice a very fast increace in quantity, but if you have a lot twice that amount will seem like fast growth. As opposed to a plant with stems that put out leaves, java moss multiplies its growing parts and though each little part grows slowely, the whole of it can really spread after a while.
It takes a while to spread over a peice of wood, but if it's a free floating clump it does seem to grow fast. |
