| I have been reading about salt use in aquariums and find there are different opinions about it's use. Some say you should use it and others say it's not needed and still others who only use it as a part of a treatment. It's all kind of confusing, I see it on the shell at the pet store in the aquarium section. I have read the info on the box, it says it's for freshwater tanks. Does anyone of you use aquarium salt? and why or why not? |

| I add aquarium salt to my tank once a month, I never have had any problem with it. Started using it because LFS said it would help keep my tank healthy. |

| | I also use it, it seems there are conflicting views on almost every thing in the hobby of keeping fish. |

| Salt is supposed to help the slime coat on FW fish. I put a little more than my LFS said to use (I forget how much now) and my water lilies pads stopped ascending and some of the exterior roots died. I did a 20% water change to dilute the salt and the pads started going up again. I was told that gars have to have salt or they will end up suddenly dying of bacterial infections. It all doesn't make much sense to me as some gars are semi-brackish and some live in the-great-lakes where I doubt there is much salt. I haven't seen any info on this concerning my fish but this subject is worth some thought to determine the optimal level for any particular species or a happy medium for a comunity tank.

| Very true, salt helps to keep the fishes slime coat healthy. Still don't use Instant Ocean or other salts that are meant for saltwater tanks. Trust me, I used some of my salt that is for my saltwater tank on one of my other tanks, and well, it didn't turn out that great. _________________ I have been keeping aquariums most of my life.
