Pet stores that employ people that don't know the first thing about fish and or fish realated items

I live in a town that has 2 pet shops that carry fish and other fish items, why is it they only seem to carry Certain things that they use on they're tanks ( that seem to never be doing good in the first place) And employ people that don't know the first thing about what they are selling. They always try to act like they know but never do.?

if you were in alberta especially calgary i'd have to say they employed them because at least it was a body to fill a job opening.

Same here too, but if your job is to get the customers to buy stuff, and becuase you couldn't give them the info they needed and they buy the wrong one or don't buy anything at all. Or when you know what you want and need and they don't how do you get what you need. I try to order stuff all the time, if they actullay know what i want the oder come back right but when they don;t they can't order it or get the wrong one. For example fish , i have made so many orders and most of the times if they do place the order cause they think they know what i was asking for it comes the wrong size part or breed or sex of fish.

i would hate to live where you guys live... over here in LA there are more than forty LFS around... some of them are all about the fish... like strictly fish... man that LFS is the best and thier crew knows a whole lot about teh fish...

the worst ones are the large ones, like petsmart and petco... OMG i hate they...

Where I live we have 3 or 4 local places to buy fish and equipment, but only one is all about fish and it is
very popular with fish keepers in the area. I also have a bigger city that is 45 min away and they have a couple of different stores. As for the employs that work at these places 2 of them have at least one guy or girl that know what they are doing , but good luck getting them at the store when you are there. The store that is dedicated to fish always has people that know what they are doing and never sell you anything you don't need.
Chain stores seem to be the worst for hiring staff that know nothing of keeping fish, most likely due to the wages offered at these stores, they are minimum wage jobs with a high turn around, you think they would locate people that now what they are doing and pay them better. Now a days that is hard to do since these stores need to stay open longer and 7 days a week to compete with the other guy.

most of the stores around me just hire to get a body in the store. I have 2 that actually care thou. One is a mom and pop operation. They are great but because they do not have extra staff they are not open all the time. The other is actually a petsmart. We are lucky with this one because the manager actually cares. If she leaves the store I will worry but for now i'm not arguing.

I have been to stores to get fish and knew more about keeping fish than the guy selling them. That is why it is better to do all the research first and buy later. I have gone to the fish store seen a fish I would like, went home and got all the info I could on that fish, because of this I have not bought fish due to there future size or incompatibility with my other fish.
I have also found out that the store is giving fish incorrect names for ex sample : they had Chinese algae eaters in a tank labelled Siamese algae eaters and when I questioned it, the guy looked at me and said I didn't know what I was talking about. I went home got a pic that was labelled from another pet store site and took it to the guy, and told him, he didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground and left. cheers

I stick with a very knowledgable vendor and still do my homework and get my kids to do some too.

ONE TIME, I was at the WalMart and there was a young man running the pet dept, that could actually answer fish questions and had probably studied Axlerod and Shultz. I was so impressed, I bought a fish from the WalMart. That was over a year ago.

You really have to watch that kind of thing, don't you.

Fish abuse is a terrible thing.
